LSVT LOUD

LSVT LOUD is an effective speech treatment for people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and other neurological conditions. It is an evidence-based treatment protocol designed to create sustained improvements in the speech and voice function of people living with Parkinson’s disease. It helps patients with speech difficulties improve their vocal volume (loudness and) and ability to be understood.

LSVT LOUD was designed to address speech issues related to Parkinson’s disease, however it can be used to assist others with a variety of conditions that cause significant problems with voice, speech and communication. Patients with progressive neurological conditions including multiple sclerosis and Huntington’s disease are suited for LSVT LOUD,and can benefit by gaining greater control of their voice.

The LSVT LOUD program aims to improve communication by improving voice and volume so that others can hear and understand you. The program involves targeted exercises that strengthen the voice box (larynx) and speech system. The main focus of the program is to ‘speak LOUD’, but it does not teach you to shout. LSVT LOUD retrains the mismatch in feedback that Parkinson’s often causes, which helps you to develop a voice with good volume that is comfortable and sounds normal to friends and family. Whilst LSVT LOUD is designed to focus on vocal loudness, research has found that it also improves other communicative skills, including articulation and intonation, and even facial expression.
